The names of over 700 law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. last night.

The total number of officers honored at the National Mall memorial wall now tops 22,600 since the initial dedication 30 years ago.

U.S. Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had a message for family members in attendance.  “When a law enforcement officer steps out of his or her door to serve the community the family steps out with them.  You the families are heroes too.  Let me light a candle this evening and say thank you.”

A final roll call was read for the officers who died in the line of duty – including Grand Forks Police Officer Cody Holte.

Among those honored were 434 officers who died in 2019 and 2020. COVID-19 cancelled last year’s event.
