Update 4:00 PM Monday

Grand Forks Fire officials have classified a Sunday night fire at the Crooked Pint Ale House as accidental — and a fire suppression system is being credited with minimizing damage.

Fire crews were called to the business on South Columbia Road around 10:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they heard an audible alarm and saw smoke coming from the back of the building.

After an investigation, officials say an electrical malfunction in the freezer equipment produced excessive heat, which transferred to nearby combustibles.

Fire Marshal Brian Geatz says the fire was initially controlled by the sprinkler system until firefighters arrived.

The building sustained some fire damage and smoke throughout the eatery. A damage estimate was not available. There were no injuries.

The Grand Forks Fire Department responded with five engines, one truck, and one command vehicle with eighteen personnel.

The fire investigation was conducted by members of the Grand Forks Fire Department Prevention Office and an electrical inspector from the Grand Forks Department of Building Safety.
