GF County looks to minimize jail construction impact

By Doug Barrett May 25, 2023 | 8:20 AM

The Grand Forks County Commission is nearing an agreement with the GF Fair Board over land use with the pending jail and juvenile detention center construction projects drawing near.

Fair officials have raised concerns over how the construction will impact access to the grounds…the raceway…and parking.

The two sides sat down Wednesday to go over the latest legal document spelling out everything from ownership and access to construction staging and the location of ponds.

Grand Forks States Attorney Haley Wamstad says the goal is to make it a one stop shop agreement.  “The prior agreements were kind of piecemealed.  There were different agreements for different parcels and it made for kind of a complicated mess….I think there were good intentions behind that.”

The two sides will take some time to review the language and meet again in June. Groundbreaking is scheduled for later this year.
